Have you ever found yourself in a season so heavy that you asked, Why do I feel like this?
To be downcast is to feel despair, to lose hope, to battle spiritual distress, discouragement, or even a broken heart. Maybe that’s exactly where you find yourself today.
When I read Psalm 42, three things stand out about David’s words:
1. He is spiritually thirsty.
2. He is deeply discouraged.
3. He speaks to his own soul.
That last one really resonates. It’s something we all can relate to—and sometimes need to do.
Take a look at verse 11:
“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”
Here, David doesn’t deny how he feels. He acknowledges it. But he doesn’t stay there. Instead, he speaks to himself—he encourages himself in the Lord. That’s powerful. It’s a spiritual reset.
“Put your hope in God,” he says. Why? Because even in his lowest moment, David knows where his hope truly lies. And then he declares, “I will yet praise Him.”
That phrase—“I will yet”—is a decision. It’s a declaration that even though things look bleak, he’s choosing to worship anyway.
There’s something incredibly powerful about praising God when you feel downcast. It shifts your perspective, stirs your faith, and strengthens your soul. Praise lifts you from despair and puts your eyes back on the One who holds you steady.
So today, if your soul feels heavy—speak truth to yourself. Choose to hope. Choose to praise. Even here. Especially here.
In Jesus’ name, keep going.
